Why Do Individuals Join Gangs?

Recently we started reading the book, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. The book talks about two gangs, the Socs and the Greasers

I think people join gangs because they want to fit in and to be "cool". Also because they see other people doing it. Most people, espically people who are minors, join gangs because they're have trouble at home or they come from a bad background. For example in The Outsiders, Ponyboy has no parents and his older brother, Darry is head of the family and Johnny's parents beat him. Individuals join gangs because they want to join something that they think they fit in.
